California Black Oak is a red oak species found on the West Coast. The only thing black is the bark. The tree is characterized by more limbs than its Eastern cousin, and is generally more slow growing and older at its harvest. The grain tends to be tighter and more varied. It is a challenge to harvest the longer clear grades and properly kiln dry the wood. We offer four grades of Black Oak Flooring: Clear, Select, Run of the Mill (ROM), and Cabin.
BLACK OAK ROM $4.39 SF
ROM is about one half #1 Common and one half mix of Clear and Select grades. The wood is the run from the log without sorting. The Cabin grade is screened out. Because of the saving in labor, the ROM grade is more economical. It meets the size criteria for #1 Common. Minimum length is 15” and will average 33”.
BLACK OAK CLEAR $5.64 SF
Clear - This grade of Black Oak is virtually flawless and uniform while still displaying the tight and varied grain patterns of Black Oak. A minimum of bright sapwood may accent the material beauty. It will have a minimum length is 15” and will average 45”.

Select - The face may contain sapwood, small streaks, pin worm holes, burls, slight imperfections in molding, and small tight knots which do not average more than one to every 3’. The minimum length is 15” and will average 39”.
